Let us first clear one thing up, the main difference between a professional and an amateur is the pro charges for the service, think of it like this, if an amateur photographer just happens to take an amazing photo there will be someone that is willing to pay for it, but an important difference with the pro is that they have the experience to take amazing photos all the time, are you willing to take that risk?, the same can be applied to videography but with a very important difference , the still photographer captures single moments and no matter how beautiful these single moments are they will only ever be single moments, now don’t get me wrong, I am not anti still photos I also take photos and I absolutely love the art of still photography, but I have to say that I have always found that the art of videography stirs something inside me that I find hard to put into words, I have thought a lot about the differences between the two arts so I will try and put it into words that I hope will convey my feelings.
I believe if you were to ask anyone what the main difference between the two arts were the answer would be an obvious, sound and motion and I would have to agree that they are both very important aspects of video, however for me the main difference is the total absence of TIME with a still, a photo is not 3 seconds long or 25 minutes long, think of this, you photograph an event, let us say it is a wedding and you use a digital camera after the day you load all of the photos onto your computer and look at the times that the photos were taken, the only references to time is the time missing between each moment captured and how long the shutter was open for, the photo is in fact truly timeless, for when you hold it in your hand and remember as much as you can about that day that moment you are looking at has nether start nor finish, however when you sit down and watch a well produced video of your day, you get to re experience your day with an out of body view, and as mentioned earlier you get to hear the sounds of your day, the sense of sound is very similar to smell, you maybe 45 years old and smell a perfume or deodorant that someone you haven't seen for 20 years used and your mind is in that instant transported back to that time, it is though you are there again.
A well produced DVD of any special occasion will become a most treasured family heirloom that can be passed through generations, a time machine of memories.
I have lost count of the amount of times I have had people say to me I wish that I had spent the money on a good videographer for my Wedding, you only have to look on utube, “wedding regrets” and listen to a few. Couples will spends hundreds if not thousands of dollars on things like ice sculptures that will melt and chair covers that are hired, suits that are hired cakes that are eaten the list goes on, and to do this they think they are saving money by not getting a professional videographer, again, don’t get me wrong these things and other things all help in making your day that much more special so wouldn’t it then make sense to make sure you hire someone that is experienced in the art of videography so they can capture things like the late afternoon sun light that is reflected on the water droplets that are forming as that ice sculpture melts away and the cake as it is playfully pushed into the new grooms mouth and then falls onto the hired tuxedo? not to mention all the sounds that go with the day, I think you get what I am feeling now.
